Flash Back - Pikes Peak Round Table
This is the week of the 2024 Pikes Peak Hill Climb, and our car and the team are up on the mountain getting ready for the race this Sunday.
With all that is going on, we didn't have the chance to record a new episode of the Podcast, so this seemed like the perfect time to go back to our Pikes Peak Roundtable from episode 30 of the Podcast.
This was recorded as we were getting ready for the 2021 Pikes Peak Hill Climb, and we had on a number of guests with a ton of experience on Pikes Peak.
We talk to:
Scott Crouch - Flatirons Tuning driver
Andy Kingsley
Stephan Verdier
Victor Kuhns
Dave Kern
It was a great discussion, and definitely worth checking out if you missed this episode.
Thanks for watching and thanks for your support!

Running Strong and Running Slow?

We are back from our second weekend testing on Pikes Peak, and the car ran well. This time out, we were starting from the middle of the mountain, and the top section. Everything that we worked through for the first weekend of testing has payed off, and the car is running well. We had very few issues come up so Scott was able to focus in driving the car much more this weekend. And for some reaso...
Cobb Flex Fuel Deep Dive with Lance and Billy from Cobb Tuning

Cobb Tuning has just released their NexGen Flex Fuel for the 2015 - 2021 WRX, which comes after the release of their first NexGen Flex Fuel kit for the Sti. We were definitely glad to see Flex Fuel come back as a function of the Cobb Accessport, but when we saw that the new system was running through the CAN Bus on these new cars, it was clear that there was a lot more that Cobb had to rework t...
Testing the Uniclutch Twin Disc Clutch on a 2014 WRX
Переглядів 889День тому
A few weeks ago, friend of the shop Mike Huml stopped by to let us know about Uniclutch. This is a fully contained twin disc clutch that has some very interesting design characteristics. The most significant of which being that it is a modular design that can be adapted to work on a number of applications. Mike is using this clutch in his 2023 WRX, and we are testing it in Carter's 2014 WRX as ...
New Problems Testing on Pikes Peak

Just as the Pikes Peak Hill Climb is different every year, we always seem to find new and interesting problems testing as well. In our first weekend testing for the 2024 Pikes Peak Hill Climb, we ran into a couple problems. Sometimes the approach that you use to understand the problem is as important as how you decide to fix it, and that may well be the case here. Thanks for watching and Stay T...
Taking an Old Car to the Track?

For episode #144 of the Podcast, Jon and Jeremy sit down to talk about taking an old car to the track. Jeremy has a number of Subaru's that he has driven on track, and all of them have some years on them. As more of us are looking back to the earlier WRX and STI to build track cars, this is becoming a more common thing to see at the track. So what should you do differently to prep an older car ...
Final Prep before Pikes Peak Testing

Our initial test of the Pikes Peak car on track with the Modena Sequential transmission went well, but we had a few issues that we needed to address. The car is back in the shop and we are going to be testing on Pikes Peak this weekend, so we have been going over the car to get ready. We have made some changes and improvements to our oil cooler setup, and we have our first prototype splitter ju...
09-14 Subaru WRX Pedal Assembly - Part Feature
Переглядів 57121 день тому
About a year after the new GR WRX was introduced in 2008, an unusual issue came up with the pedal box. On some of the early 2008 and 2009 Manual Transmission cars, people started noticing creaking noises when they were pushing in the clutch or brake pedal. There was a bulletin at the time from Subaru, and there have been a few different ways to try to fix or prevent this issue from happening on...

One of the keys to keeping your engine reliable is oil pressure. When we had Jeremy from Money Shift Rally on the Podcast a few weeks ago to talk about all the data he had collected from his Rally car, this was one of the first things that we wanted to talk about. So how does oil temperature effect oil pressure? We have some great information for you about this relationship in this clip, and if...

2015 STI Steering Rack - Quick Ratio Retrofit?

Sequential Shifts Focus - Install and Dyno Testing

A big thanks goes out to Dave and the folks at ...

Troubleshooting Why your AOS doesn't work
I'm visiting family in Denver currently. I have two GC coupes back home - one getting a 257 and 6 speed soon, and a fairly stock 2.5RS. Any recommendations for parts I should get from you guys that are only available for pickup?
The guy in the middle victor, I copied his set up with a 12 mm pump and proper clearance rods and mains and have have had nothing but awesome results. That video changed my life way back when haha
So pumped. I’m ready to hear that subie roar up the mountain.
How can I find the CAN bus H and L cables to connect to my aftermarket power tailgate in my 2019 Subaru Crosstrek?
Couple of handsome gents
So sequential it is❤
None of us are surprised how expensive this is 😂😂😂
I love my 5 speed but we built a 400+ hp setup and I'm only on 10psi 😢 Its been my daily for about 3 years and no issues but in turning the power up finally and I know the trans isn't going to last.
I’ve been running a uniclutch sport on my 2017 WRX for maybe 3 or 4 months now. Happy to share my my experience as well if you’re curious
On a high level - function and pedal feel truly are top notch and the thing absolutely stands up to their claim of less effort for more clamping. There are some interesting issues and sounds but to be honest, it’s my first twin disc I’ve ever used so I do struggle when I try to figure what sounds are indicative of a real problem and what may just be something I’m not used to hearing and is hard to convey on a video clip :/ Despite the noises, I’ve been sending it anyways as I do believe it’s just normal noise, and it hasn’t failed to deliver yet
Well done. Thanks. I agree, HKS design = max flow.
Every one is fighting for that colder dense air in the morning haha
This close to the race man. Time to send it
Bring back flex for 04+ STI’s. I’ll buy it. Kudos for getting Cobb on the channel Jon.
Trust me when I say this - We would LOVE to. The main hurdle is cost. Finding a well documented, low mileage car that would be fit for emissions testing is near impossible as they are all upwards of 20 years old at this point. I can't (and won't) say it will never happen, but the business case becomes increasingly more difficult the older the cars get. - Marshall@COBB
@@cobbtuning my 2007 STi is around 80k miles, clean, and only lightly modified. What kind of documentation is needed? Does it have to be on the original engine, or is a replacement fine?
The expansion tank vents to the coolant reservoir via a tube that is kept in coolant at all times. This allows the system to heat up and cool down, while pushing coolant in and out of the expansion tank without sucking air back in (which could lose your bleed of the system). Since the radiator vents to the top of the expansion tank, you want it to be able to push coolant out, but not pull anything back, because it could pull air back in and lose the bleed. The recommended way to set this system up basically allows for the proper regulation of pressure and control of thermal expansion in the system while having an ambient-pressure coolant reservoir available to the user and not allowing any air to enter the system. That being said, if you REALLY fill the expansion tank up, you probably won't ever get enough air in the cooling system to cause a problem, but if you 1. don't get the tank completely full, or 2. allow air to enter the expansion tank in some way (e.g. low coolant in the reservoir), you could end up in trouble.
I got my 2016 wrx In 2017 with 18k miles. The coolant appears green?
Awesome update guys. If your leaking water out the intercooler sprayer a one way check valve with pressure relief valve will stop the drip. I gotta know what hood is that?
My 305bhp hawkeye twinscroll has a fairly linear torque curve from 2k rpm all the way to redline. Much prefer it to the kick in arse single scroll that runs out of puff at 6.5k.
Ob1, I missed this vid. I'm glad I found it, do you believe WPC is effective in a part like this? Would you recommend porting where the oil is feed to the oil filter on the block?
Does it fit the 2016 wrx?? Been looking so long for a good replacement kit
LOOKING FORWARD TO SOME FA24DIT/F FLEX KITS. ETHANOL THRASHES MOTORS IN THE LONG RUN ( FUEL DILUTION, OIL ADDITIVE PACKAGE BREAKDOWN/OXIDATION, CONDENSATION ETC) BUT IT DEFINITELY HAS ITS PLACE AROUND E40-E60 AND THE COOLER/DENSER EFFECTS', AND IS GREAT FOR TUNING SAFETY ( ESPECIALLY KNOCK PRONE FA20'S) AND WEEKEND WARRIOR TRACK STUFF. I NO LONGER DAILY MY CARS ON ETHANOL BC OF OVERALL LONG TERM RELIABILITY ETC BUT I DO USE THE FLEX KIT ON MY EJ'S WHEN I WANT TO GO OUT TO A TRACK DAY. LOOKING FORWARD TO FLEX KITS FOR THE 22,23,24 VB WRX SPECIFICALLY THE 23 FOR NOW LOL
Thanks for the info, 52k on my FA-20 and have been burning 0 oil since i bought it (first owner). Feel a bit better now about not putting one on, but am buying one now since im preemptively replacing the PCV with a new valve and will already be there. Choosing catch can because i change my own oil and it will just be apart of my regimen. Appreciate your content!
What's the exhaust setup? Sounds killer!

That Ford f150 sounded like a tank rollin down the street. Awesome lol
Sounds like every Ford F-150 out there haha
Go Flatiron boyz!! thanks for the update Jon,always facing challenges on the Mountain
Awesome video!!! I am learning lots. A related question of ethanol fuel system and the COBB hardware and software; can your gear and software be set up to regulate when an ethanol+water injection system is set to off, on, and then turns off again? I have heard from a few sources that driving very short distances, say between 0 to 10 minutes, with either E30-85 or ethanol+water active from a cold start can cause a black gel like sludge of deposits to build up in the engine and cause major problems. So to clarify, can the COBB hardware and software be set up to engage the use of ethanol+water (in the intake manifold or charge cooler) after a few minutes of initial driving after cold start, when the engine has had a chance to warm up, and then alternatively be manually selected to turn off whenever the driver wants to? Can an existing engine temperature sensor on the car (or added sensor) be used to trigger the start of ethanol+water use when the ECU knows that the temperature is in the correct window for optimal use?
They aren't talking about supplemental fuel injection in this video. They're talking about filling your tank with E85 at the pump instead of gasoline and having that go through the regular fuel system.
@MR__JUSTIN thank you. I understand their presentation and what you wrote. I am asking about alternative uses of their Cobb gear for a different application using water-ethanol. I will contact them directly, no worries.
Lance tuned my Sti many moons ago. He wasn't perfect but that tune allowed me to beat on that car with elevated power levels for years without worry. When i finally pulled the engine at 90k the engine itself was still in great shape. Just started getting oil leaks. I am very grateful. He certainly knows what he is doing and we should absolutely listen to him.
My 2005 LGT disliked that.
Just go open source like the rest of us normal people. Forget Cobb MerpMod and similar mods available to utilize most of the advanced functionalities we all know and love with Accessports.
What I dont understand, is why they don't market the old flex fuel kits as for "Off road use ONLY". Then push out reminders to the customers that the mod is not EPA street legal, so it should be used at their own risk. I dont know how much legal pressure Cobb was dealing with from the EPA, but the government should not have the right to tell a aftermarket perfomance car part company what they can and cannot sell.
THEYVE EXPLAINED THIS IN PODCASTS OVER AT IAG.. THE STUFF THAT IS LABELED "FOR OFF ROAD USE" IS A HUGE RED FLAG FOR THE EPA AND THEY STATED THAT THE "OFF ROAD USE ONLY " HAS ZERO LEGAL PROTECTION IN TODAYS EPA ENVIROMENT AND SIMPLY WOULD EQUATE TO HUGE FINES FROM THE CORRUPT GOVERNING BODY.
Your answer is at 45:15
We will never forget what you did to your customer base when yall folded to the EPA. Never will I buy another Cobb product
WHAT DID THEY DO TO THEIR CUSTOMERS ?? YOU EXTREMELY JADED..WHAT GIVES ?
You’re dense
It’s like what Jon said…. Cobb HAD TO rip off the bandaid and make necessary changes to the business model. Now that it’s been a couple years since the redirect, I drive much more at peace knowing my tunes/setup are compliant… especially here in CA
Bot
Personally I understood the pulling off of the band aid, but the way they went about it was like spraying it with alcohol.
I understand the why they hand to do it; with the whole EPA thing and all but what I find reprehensible is that they knew well before selling the flex fuel kits on the GDs that they were going to do what they did. They sold the kits anyways, and then they said, "sorry, all sales are final" No refunds. That is not an EPA thing, that is a responsibility that a well-established company that the community loves and trusts has a mandate to abide to and that is why I cannot support this company. If you are a consumer, willing to spend hundreds of dollars (which in this economy is crazy expensive) and know that you do not have a guarantee that you will neither get your product or unbeknownst to you it will become obsolete with no way of getting your money back you would think twice about supporting such a company. No company should be allowed to get away with that; not airlines, hotels, or simple aftermarket third party goods. Make a statement with who you patronize with your business and I, for one, will not be supporting COBB in any way.
Funny because I got a full refund on my flex fuel kit for my GD.
@@fredastaire6156 we offered full refunds on both new in box and even used Flex Fuel kits for over a year.
@@fredastaire6156 flex fuel kits hadn't been "In stock" for upwards of ~2 months (depending on the kit) before we stopped sale. We then proceeded to offer buy-backs on new-in-box kits and even refunded used kits for well over a year. - Marshall@COBB
Do they say if CARB approval is coming soon?

so the answer is yes, but actually no lmfao carb is such a racket

One fits all. No thanks. That adapter for input shaft is probably first thing to break. Time will tell.
No worries. There are a lot of other options out there too. This was a really interesting solution to the problem of a clutch and that is why we wanted to test it out. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
They must of smelled my clutch slipping in 4th. I’m Definately considering this
Ha! Well, I can't speak for them, but it is definitely an interesting clutch. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
that trans doesnt look like my 5spd in my 13 wrx! looks like a 6spd🤷
Is the company part of the mantic clutch family?
Can't thank you all enough for putting this together, we are looking forward to working with you on more Subaru projects in the future!
Thanks very much Mike! Definitely impressed by this clutch so far.
Any clue whether replacement friction discs will be available?
Thanks for watching and thanks for the question. Yes, replacement parts should be available. Stay Tuned!
Now I've gotta wait for 6M version🙄 Moving right along, between an oem helical front diff on a 2008+ STI 6M DCCD trans and a similar quaife front diff, which would you choose and why since they're the same price?
Thanks for your question. There is not much of a difference between the OE TBD and Quaife. I think I'd stick with the factory one since you all ready have it. If you were going to switch, I'd say look at Cusco, but that is really more for off-road, or track use. The Torque Biasing differential is better for daily/street use. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
@@FlatironsTuning so oem then. Can you tell if that front diff needs replacement just by driving the car?
@@vannevels6758 Those kinds of differentials tent to be really durable. If you were hearing a lot of bearing noise, etc. I'd say that you would want to tear the transmission down and inspect the differential. But for the most part, the front diff tends to just work. What symptoms are you having?
@@FlatironsTuning despite an alignment, the car pulls to the right under moderate and up acceleration which I attribute to the front diff. I got STI drivetrain swap into my 06 OBXT. There's no noise besides gear whine. The trans has 160K+- on it so I was getting your thoughts on it.
@@vannevels6758 Gotcha. Pulling like that could be a lot of things, and the front differential would be quite low on my list of possible causes. A TBD would not usually cause that. I'd guess that suspension bushings being worn or allowing more movement would be the most likely cause. That wouldn't show up on an alignment. Definitely take a good look at all of the front and rear bushings. On the Outbacks, the front rear lower control arm bushings are quite prone to failing and it would cause pulling like you are describing, etc. Hope that helps!
Did you have to adjust your clutch pedal at all?
Thanks for your question. No adjustment of the pedal was needed. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
You should never adjust your clutch pedal unless something goes wrong between the pedal cluster and the master cylinder. This isn't cable days, the important relationship between the pedal and master is to set it up so you have minimal free play between the pedal and master, but you are not preloading the master, which will cause your clutch to not be able to retract.
@Levibetz I put a twin disc clutchmasters and didn't adjust the pedal, which over extended the pressure plate and warped the discs..
@@xtingtangx Ah well yeah that's another thing to check, you'd want to setup a pedal stop for that though, the freeplay shouldn't be adjusted IMO.
Doesn’t work for the STI 6 speed?
Thanks for the question. Currently this is only available as a "Push" style clutch, so it wouldn't work on the "Pull" style STI 6-speed. I am told that an option for the STI is on its way though, so hopefully it will be an option in the next couple of months. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
Well that's fucked up.
We have the pull style for the STI in production now. ETA is early fall 2024. Otherwise, have to use a push-pull conversion kit. Pull style will only be available in the Track version (as of the day I am typing this).
Make a video on paring a turbo w cams, what would be ideal for 272 cams etc
Well that explains why my ej257 always has an air pocket in the expansion tank every 2-3 days. I top off my coolant every other day and can’t figure out where it goes. I have no leaks and my outfront v3 block only has 30k on the build so no way it’s the head gaskets lol, I have the mishimoto rad cap on the rad not on the expansion tank. I’ll switch them out and see what happens. My car idles fine at 181-185 but when I’m driving it doesn’t ever go below 190 and sometimes gets to 210. Never goes past that. I’ll order new caps and hopefully that solves my issue.
Thanks for watching and definitely hope this helps. Stay Tuned!
Ps the jdm 06 wrx 4:44 5 speed is tough but not tough enough. The bearings failed due to heat. The gears look perfect. But when the bearing fails. And the bearing goes through fifth gear and out the side of the case. With all the marbles that someone put in their before the race lol
Make sure to mark your territory at the track day in your old car. I always end up dripping the tranny oil on the track. Even the track boss is like damnit rob. Oil on the track again. But at least he laughs cuz I just park it in the grass and go get the clean up kit. I’m a pro by now lol
I'll end the debate...19 inch wheels 😂
Dom is one of the best Subaru tuners in the USA.
To me the smoke looked like oil pushing past the turbo seal and getting into the intake my car does this after sitting for awhile.
